Daufuskie Island Information

What is it about Daufuskie that makes you want to know more and keeps you coming back ? First, it’s the fact that Daufuskie is an island accessible only by boat. Whether it’s by ferry from Hilton Head or Savannah or arriving by your own boat, arriving on Daufuskie is a pleasurable reward. You can come via the Daufuskie Island Resort ferry and arrive at the Melrose Landing or as a Haig Point member you can travel on their ferries to the Haig Point dock. If you come ashore at the county dock, you will immediately come upon Marshside Mama’s, a wonderful low country restaurant that is unique in all the world. Immediately adjacent is the general store.

Next, all throughout Daufuskie there are sandy lanes shaded by towering pines and live oaks. There are painted cottages, monuments to the great Gullah history of the island, as well as lighthouses, one at the North end in Haig Point and one at the South at Bloody Point. There is the beautiful old frame First Union African Baptist Church sitting just down the road from the old school which became known in the 1970’s as the place where Pat Conroy’s inspiration for his first novel began.

Daufuskie is a friendly island. There is a strong sense of community, and everyone pitches in for the good of the island. Many times throughout the year there are events that bring all the residents together: the annual island cleanup, Thanksgiving dinner for all residents, the annual Christmas parade and of course, Daufuskie Day.

Daufuskie is the home of artisans such as the Silver Dew Pottery and the Iron Fish Art Shop. The new Daufuskie Art Gallery has been a great spot to see the collections of many artists. The island has also been the basis of books such as Pat Conroy's "The Water is Wide", Billie Burn's "An Island Named Daufuskie", Lancy Burn's "The Long Voyage Home", Sallie Ann Robinson's "Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way", Billie Burn's "Stirrin' the Pots on Daufuskie" and Roger Pinckney's "The Right Side of the River".

In addition Haig Point resident Dr. Barth Hoogstraten, has written two books, "Eyes of The Blind" and "Cancer Doctor". We welcome you to experience Daufuskie. Daufuskie Living is for those who want to experience life the way it was meant to be.
